- Strip the box down to base hardware: CPU, one stick of RAM, vid card, HD. Rip out EVERYTHING else - sound, modem, 3D card, you name it, take it out.
- Install Win98, preferably SE (SE fixed a lot of bugs in the Explorer shell).
- Install the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers.
- Stable? If not, replace RAM with another stick.
- Stable? If not, remove CPU fan and place 20" box fan, on medium, alongside the case, facing in.
- Stable? If not. replace power supply.
- Stable? If not, UNDERCLOCK motherboard - 50Mhz is a good place to set the FSB to start with.
- Stable? If not, replace vid card/motherboard.
You're looking for the part that makes things go bonkers. If at any point you reach stability, start adding back in the other parts, starting with the rest of your system memory. Run your box for a few hours with the Unreal flyby looping. Reboot. Do it again. Only then add another part. Stop when you find the bad part.
I've had a flakey power suply cause problems.
I've had a DIMM who's PCB was just a wee bit too long cause problems.
I've had a motherboard who's AGP slot was out of whack and would only run my AGP card at 50Mhz - 66 killed the AGP interface.
I've had heat problems with my STOCK, non-OCed Athlon.
I've had drivers which would hose Win95/98 and give me that infamous "Windows Protection Error" - latest one was DirectCD - apparently, AMD's Irongate and DirectCD don't get along.
It's a matter of trial and error, but when in doubt, take it down to the base components and work your way up piece by piece.
Oh, and Super7 chipsets generally blow, especially if you've got an AGP vid card. Try for a PCI one for testing purposes.
Just my $0.02
[This message has been edited by IceStorm (edited January 07, 2000).]
[This message has been edited by IceStorm (edited January 07, 2000).]
